  Lincoln Envirotown 2010 Writing Competition

Write an Illustrated Poem on an environmental/sustainability theme
The poem can be long or short, rhyme or not, or could be a haiku poem (Haiku poems often consist of three lines of 5, 7 and 5 syllables, but can vary.)

We hope to make the best poems into a book to be available locally, as we did with the previous Lincoln stories. The National Library has asked for a copy of our other books – so your poems might be there too!

  Latest Liffey Stream Test Results

The Lincoln Environmental Organisation (LEO) helped by LET and WaterWatch tested the Liffey stream on the 3rd May 2010. We have been testing it for the last few years. We found that from the indicator invertebrates, the water was “degraded”, the Dissolved Oxygen was only 69.9% which is “unsatisfactory”, the dissolved nitrate level was 4.0 mg/L which is 10 times worse than unsatisfactory, the dissolved phosphate levels were 0.15mg/L (anything higher than 0.5 is unsatisfactory).
The coli count was 3281 CFU’s per 100mL, where over 2000 is counted as degraded, however the count of E.coli and salmonella was very low, which was unusual, as it is usually high. This was probably because it has been very dry with no water runoff. The water in the stream would have come from the springs.

The indicator invertebrates showed the lowest number of species we had ever seen (only 2).

Check out the results information here.

  More sustainability happening in Lincoln!

Not only do we have a new supermarket that is the first in NZ to have wind turbines generating energy in its car park, but we also have many more businesses doing their bit.
The second Lincoln Envirotown Responsible Business Awards ceremony was held on the 24th September with the awards being presented by local Councillor, Lindsay Philps.

Forty businesses have gained awards (6 more than last year), 2 gaining platinum, and 18 gold. Last year we decided that we needed something more for the gold businesses to aim for, so this year we not only have platinum awards, but also have a Lincoln Envirotown Trophy gifted by Lincoln University and Ngai Tahu Property. This was presented to the top business by John Clark (financial director, Lincoln University) and David Schwartfeger (Development Manager, Ngai Tahu Property). The inaugural winner of the trophy was Landcare Research (head office, Lincoln). Congratulations! The Responsible Business Award survey is available in our resources section.

Every business gaining an award received a certificate, which they can display in their business premises. They also got an assessment outlining the main things they are doing well and suggestions they can work on. We are very pleased to see the improvements made by business since last year. The aim is to not only encourage and support environmentally sustainable practices by businesses, but to also promote Lincoln Businesses and encourage people to support their local community.

The businesses gaining platinum are Lincoln Physiotherapy and Landcare Research – exceedingly well done!

In 2009 Prebbleton held their first Responsible Business Awards. 36 businesses took part, all gaining an award with 10 businesses gaining gold. Well Done!

  2009 Story writing competition.

The competition this year will be on sustainability ideas that were used in the past, are no longer commonly used now, but may be again in the future - such as milk used to be sold in reusable glass bottles. Interview your grandparents, parents, older neighbours etc and get their ideas about what life was like when they were young and things they used to do. Then write the ideas into a story including how some of these ideas might come back into use and why and perhaps add some good ideas of your own that might be used in the future. It will be a good idea to do a bit of research about why we might need to change how we do things such as producing less waste, using less energy.

The deadline will be Friday 24 July to tie in with the LET kidsfest holiday activity of “Past and Future” held on Tuesday July 14th in the Lincoln Community Centre.

  BIOBLITZ a great success!

Hundreds if not thousands of people headed towards the Liffey domain in
Lincoln. A number of scientists including the famous TV “Bugman” (Ruud
Kleinpaste) set the scene for Lincoln Primary kids with talks at the school on
Friday afternoon, so by after school when the event started at 3.15 on the 3rd
April, large numbers of school children and many of their parents were ready to
follow Ruud along the stream to collect bugs. Over the 24 hours the
large team of scientists, most from Lincoln University and Landcare Research,
took groups of people to look for specific types of living things as well as
manned the microscopes to identify the samples that the public brought in.

A full report of the days happenings is available in the April newsletter.

  BIOBLITZ - Liffey Reserve, (3rd & 4th April!)

Join us in the Lincoln Liffey Domain between 3.15pm Friday 3rd April and 3.15pm Saturday 4th April.

BioBlitz is a celebration of the diversity of life. It helps people understand and appreciate local biodiversity, and measure the health of their local environment. Part contest, part festival, part educational event and part scientific survey – BioBlitz is a scientific race against time. Our goal is to find as many species as we can in 24 hours in the Liffey Domain.

TVNZ recognizes that Lincoln locals are getting green-fingered

High prices and concerns about what we are eating is prompting more and more Kiwis to grow their own vegetables.

Interest in the new community garden at Lincoln, near Christchurch, is growing fast as people follow a national trend and switch to growing their own.

"They're becoming more aware of food security, more aware of health and they're certainly aware of the cost," says Cello Robertson, Lincoln Community Gardens.

And cost is exactly why Sue Jones started her first veggie patch.

"We've got a young family. We eat a lot and finding the food bills huge," says Jones.

Seed companies say that growing your own vegetables is becoming quite popular with sale of packets of seeds has increased by 30% to 40% this year alone.

Retailers are also saying that vegetable plants are just about walking out the door.

The main idea behind the community garden is to learn from the experts then take that knowledge home.

"There's a feeling of people wanting to garden. But they don't know where to start so what we're trying to say here is - start," says Cello.

They are expecting this trend will keep on growing.

Lincoln Community Garden

Our Community Garden would promote sustainability with a supportive and inclusive community food-growing project - very important with rising fuel and food costs. It will also provide educational opportunities for local people, both children and adults. We are planning to work with the Lincoln Kidsfirst Kindergarten as part of their Gold Enviroschools project. There will provision for personal allotments, communal growing space and demonstration areas for educational purposes. We are hoping to have a part time manager to set up and manage the gardens.

Lincoln Envirotown launches its Responsible Business Certificate

The Lincoln Envirotown Trust was successful in gaining support from the Canterbury Community Trust for the LET Responsible Business Certificate. The survey and assessment process has been trialled by volunteer Lincoln businesses during development and followed on from an informal survey that showed that most, if not all, Lincoln businesses were undertaking at least some environmentally sustainable practices.

To gain a certificate a business will complete a survey about their practices in the area of environmental sustainability and then receive a visit by consultant Chris Hawkins. Each business will then receive a Bronze, Silver, or Gold level framed certificate to demonstrate their level of achievement and their commitment to the sustainable future of the Lincoln community. Businesses can then upgrade to a higher-level certificate as soon as their sustainable practices have improved further.

Lincoln Envirotown Trust will publicise those businesses that participate and will encourage people to support them. Chris will be contacting business from 17 April 2008. Please give Chris and the Trust your full support. This will be a totally FREE service to Lincoln Businesses - while our money lasts!

If you would like further information or to be the first to sign up, please contact Sue Jarvis on 329 5858 or 325 2121.
