For our fledgling industry we were instrumental in the founding of the New Zealand Photovoltaic Association (NZPVA) and the Sustainable Electricity Association of New Zealand (SEANZ) and were founding Board members of both associations for many years.
For the community we also started and operated the Sustainability EXPO for 8 years – which were a great opportunity for the public to find out more about sustainable living options. Given the right opportunity we would love to begin these informational events again as a means to help educate the public.

The carbon footprint is kept to a minimum as much as possible using the environment to not only heat but light the house .
This is achieved by having stone heat - sink walls that captures the heat of the sun, and a floor slab that is extra thick for thermal mass .
The windows have low e glass ,argon gas double glazing.
Lighting is high-efficiency halogen and fluorescent fittings with many dimmable and switched wired for efficiency .There are the Velux sun tunnels that provide natural daylight where otherwise there would be none .
Showers are low flow toilet cisterns are low water usage.
This site includes a vegetable/herb garden , irrigation is from collected rainwater which is stored in an underground tank .

All plants are (hand grown) no machines used here in the natural season(s) in a non heated green house and then hardened off outside before sale. No chemical sprays /fertilisers are used on plants other than Bio-gro or natural sprays used occasionally when necessary for out breaks of insects. To reduce plastic waste, my pots are washed and reused, and now use a wooden (also reuseable or can be composted). At my main outlet a generic sign is used only. Customers are now encouraged to drop off pots for reuse and this is working well.I sell locally in the Peninsula and Selwyn area. Education is an important part of of my business, I have set up worm farms in the past in Peninsula schools and have given talks and demonstrations on gardening. I have garden groups and BHU students for visits and work experience and have done talks to Probus and other community groups. I write a monthly garden magazine 'The Growing Tip' on the basics of growing vegetables, this is available as a free complimentary wherever my plants are sold and (online for anyone interested). |
